Statement of purpose (SOP) for Master of Project Management

I am [name of the applicant], a 23-year-old graduate from Vietnam. I am a permanent resident of 112233 Le Thi Bach Cat, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I live with my family: my mother, father and elder brother and sister. Regarding my academic achievements, I completed my Bachelor of Construction Economics from [name of the university] in January 2021. After completing my course, I got a job offer from [name of the company] in February, and I have been working there as a project head. Currently, my task is to plan the entire housing colony. It is not because of any drawbacks about my job, but because of my learning desire I have planned my Master’s degree. After working for nearly a year, I felt I should learn more skills and theoretical knowledge to remain at the top of my career.

I first prepared for IELTS from an online platform to achieve my goal. When I began to get a good band score during the mock tests, without a second thought, I booked a test date and secured an overall of 6.5 (Listening- 7.0, Speaking- 7.0, Reading- 6.5, and Writing-6.0).

After I decided to study abroad, I started to search for my desired course in various universities in different corners of the world. During my research, I learned about Australia, the USA, the UK and Denmark as the best academic destinations in the world. I did not choose Denmark and Canada because of the language barrier and icy weather conditions. Less safe cities in the USA discouraged me from applying there. Alternatively, the UK is among the world's best countries to pursue education. The tuition fees are comparatively lower in the UK than in other countries. So, it wasn't hard for me to choose the UK as my destination to continue my education. There are around 130 universities in the UK, counting all four countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). And of those universities, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are in the top positions in the World University Rankings 2019 published by the Times Higher Education. Students from over 200 different countries choose to study in the UK due to its affordability and high education standards, which is one reason I chose the UK. I can observe that the education system in the UK is more progressive and systematic. With their scientific-based courses and expert professionals as tutors, they enable learners to become creative and practically capable. The UK is the home to many significant industries and research centres which helps a student to learn about the dynamics of various fields. Furthermore, the UK government offers a PSW (post-study work) program, which will be very helpful because I will get a chance to learn new techniques, and skills and gain experience in my related field. The UK is also one of the safest destinations for International students to study and live in, where students from different parts of the world come to pursue their education.

This Project Management degree course also has the option of a 1-year industry placement. A project management industrial placement will allow us to develop knowledge and skills in a real-world environment while completing an applied research project. This will give us an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after graduation and could be a good starting point for setting up our consultancy business. This course addresses the growing complexity of projects and incorporates critical tools and techniques. We will gain an understanding of the core competencies required to drive a successful conclusion and an appreciation of using a more holistic, international and ethical stakeholder project management approach. This Project Management course will support our career progression by developing critical thinking and research skills to enhance our business knowledge and understanding. This will further teach us the theory of effective practice and equip us with the essential skills, confidence and competence to assist you when you venture into our chosen industry. We will learn to think laterally, challenge convention and offer knowledge-based solutions to business issues, which is an advantage that will set us apart from peers and colleagues in the business environment. This course explores project management through a series of progressive modules, developing our knowledge from the fundamentals to modules addressing risk, resilience and contingency planning. We will also explore critical issues facing project managers, such as project finance and procurement, managing project teams, critical perspectives and social impact and responsibility.

After much research, I found that [name of chosen college] would fit me best. I am willing to pursue my course with one year of industry placement from a university with international recognition. I got highly impressed by the website itself, and I have also watched many testimonials that seem and sound very promising. With 171 years of teaching people from different corners of the world in the heart of London, the university holds a reputation for providing qualitative and world-renowned education. They have the Community Enterprise Gold Mark in recognition of the responsible way they do business. According to the Sunday Times, this university is among the top 15 universities in the country for teaching quality. The university focuses on practical learning, including field trips, projects, group activities and case studies.

Furthermore, the university comprises a global family with a network of over 23,000 alumni worldwide. According to the survey by NSS (National Student Survey), one of the most extensive student surveys in the world carried out by the Office for Students on behalf of the UK funding and regulatory bodies, [name of chosen college] is now [ranking] Higher Education Institutions in England for overall student satisfaction. Moreover, the university has been named the fastest-rising university in the North for the second year. It has been placed in.... position, showing a rise of 21 places, in the 2020 league table for Teaching Quality. Moreover, the course content is perfectly designed to provide practical exposure to the students and theoretical knowledge, making the university more appealing.

I discovered that my country provides theoretical-based studies, so students tend to be deprived of many opportunities and skills. The education system in Vietnam is still based on traditional ways, and we still have ancient teaching and learning methods lacking modernization, innovation and creativity. The courses here mainly focus on theoretical education, and the students get meagre practical exposure. Hence, the graduates from my home country lack the skills and experience to apply their knowledge in real-life situations and, as a result find it difficult to get relevant jobs. Regarding education, I did not want to take a risk, so I finally decided to study overseas.

I am a believer that Education is the most important thing. The Master of Project Management program I have chosen has 1 year of industry placement, which will help me learn to the fullest. As I was always keen to know the work ethics and the way people work in a natural work environment, and with this program, I will get an opportunity to live and practice the work life. After completing my studies, I can apply for a Post Study Work (PSW) Visa. During my time at PSW, I will try my best to invest all my learning and to be productive to its peak. In Vietnam, there is a need for qualified project managers, so I will use my professional skills, knowledge and exposure to develop project management fields in my community and the whole nation. After graduating from [name of chosen college], I plan on returning to Vietnam and working in the [few names of the top-ranked employment providers of Vietnam] as they are the best-growing industry. The career growth here is also very bright. Similarly, I am hoping that I will be able to compete in the international market and get opportunities to work with Multinational Companies.

Yours Sincerely,
