Statement of purpose (SOP) for Master of Public Health (MPH)

I am [name of the applicant], born on [birth date]. I am a permanent resident of Rajshree Talkies, Dahisar, Mumbai, India, with a small-sized family consisting of my grandfather, father, mother, elder brother and me.

Regarding my academic qualifications, I completed my Bachelor of Public Health from [name of the University] Pune in 2020 with 87.31%. After that, I joined [name of the company] as a junior research officer and have been working there until now. Similarly, I attended the IELTS exam on [full date] and scored an overall band score of 7.5 with an individual band score of listening 6.5, reading 6.5, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.5. With this academic and English proficiency, I plan to pursue my Master of Public Health from [name of the college].

After completing my undergraduate degree with an outstanding grade, I got my first job at [name of the company]. I have been working there as a junior research officer till this time. This project focuses on sanitation in rural India. Some of my responsibilities are collecting data from the villages, documenting them, and making reports. I am assisting my senior project head. After working for nearly 1 year, I now feel that there is so much more to learn and study. Thus I planned for my further study.

I found out that my home country provides theoretical-based studies, depriving students of many opportunities and skills. The education system in India is still based on traditional ways and we still have ancient teaching and learning methods lacking modernization, innovation and creativity. The courses here are mainly focused on providing theoretical education, and the students get a meagre amount of practical exposure. Hence, the graduates from my home country lack the skills and experience to apply their knowledge in real life. As a result, it isn't easy to get employment opportunities in international job markets. Regarding education, I did not want to take risks, so I decided to study overseas.

After I decided to study abroad, I started to search for my desired course in various universities in different corners of the world. During my research, I learned about Australia, the USA and the UK and Denmark as the best academic destinations in the world. I did not choose Denmark because of its language barrier and extreme weather conditions. The UK is on the top list of world's best countries to pursue education. Furthermore, the tuition fees are comparatively lower in the UK than in any of those countries. So, it wasn't hard for me to choose the UK as my destination to continue my education. There are around 130 universities in the UK, counting all four countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). And out of those universities, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are in the top two positions in the World University Rankings 2019 published by the Times Higher Education. Students from over 200 different countries choose to study in the UK due to its affordability and high education standards, which is one reason I chose the UK. I can observe that the education system in the UK is more progressive and systematic. With their scientific-based courses and expert professionals as tutors, they enable learners to become creative and practically capable. The UK is the home to many significant industries and research centres which helps a student to learn about the dynamics of various fields.

Furthermore, the UK government offers a PSW (post-study work) program, which will be very helpful for me because I will get a chance to learn new techniques and skills and to get experience in my related field. Their culture fascinates me a lot. Their lifestyle attracts me like a magnet. I am fascinated by its health benefits and eco-friendly nature. Besides this, the UK is also one of the safest destinations for International students to study and live in, where students from different parts of the world come to pursue their education. After a lot of research, I found that [name of your chosen college] will fit me best, and I am willing to pursue my MPH from the University which has international recognition. I got highly impressed by the website itself as I have also watched many testimonials that seem very promising. With 178 years of teaching people from different corners of the world in the heart of London, the university holds a reputation for providing qualitative and world-renowned education. This university is among the top 10 universities in the country for teaching quality, according to the Sunday Times. The university focuses on practical learning, including field trips, projects, group activities and case studies.

Furthermore, the university comprises a global family with a network of over 28,000 alumni worldwide. According to the survey by NSS (National Student Survey), one of the most extensive student surveys in the world carried out by the Office for Students on behalf of the UK funding and regulatory bodies, [name of your chosen college] is now [ranking] Higher Education Institutions in England for overall student satisfaction. Moreover, the university has been named the fastest-rising university in the North for the second year. It has been placed in.... position, showing a rise of 21 places, in the 2020 league table for Teaching Quality. Moreover, the course content is perfectly designed to provide practical exposure to the students and theoretical knowledge, making the university more appealing.

I wanted to pursue a Master of Public Health in the UK because I have always wanted to learn more about public health and safety. I believe this degree is perfect for me because I will get to learn all the subjects. Additionally, I will learn from London-based organizations as I was always keen to know about people's work practices in their workplace. This full-time course merges the study of epidemiology, biostatistics and health research methods with public health skills. It will suit those with medical and non-medical backgrounds interested in developing their research skills and public health career. Course lecturers are leaders in academic fields of statistics, epidemiology (chronic diseases and infectious diseases) and health services research. Guest speakers include public health professionals with experience in developing, managing and implementing interventions in public health.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training offers some opportunities to students on the MPH Course to visit different multilateral agencies and international organisations in Geneva, Switzerland. Further onsite work visits are organised to support quality improvement initiatives in the local NHS Trusts. We will have opportunities to undertake a summer research project with a wide range of NHS and public health organisations, global health institutions, and think-tank groups.

Education is the most crucial thing because an uneducated person can see water in the river, whereas; an educated person can see electricity in the water. The MPH program I have chosen perfectly combines theoretical and practical aspects. As I was always keen to know work ethics and how people work in a natural environment, I can live and practice the work life with this program. After completing my studies, I can apply for a Post Study Work (PSW) Visa. During my time at PSW, I will try my best to invest all my learning and to be productive to its peak. In India, there is a need for qualified public health experts, so I will use my professional skills, knowledge and exposure to develop the public health sector in my community and the whole nation. After graduating from [name of your chosen college], I plan on returning to India and working in the [few names of the top-ranked health organization of India] as they are the dominant projects. The career growth here is also very bright. I am very hopeful that I will get the opportunity to enrol at your University to pursue my post-graduation.

Yours Sincerely,
