Statement of purpose (SOP) sample for Artificial Intelligence - AI

Young minds usually find beauty in everything, and so did mine, but as I grew up into a teenager, the prospect of how the mechanisms of machines and mobile phones work fascinated me a lot. I chose the science field to feed my curiosity, but once I started understanding things, it was as if I opened a Pandora’s Box. When I was in high school, the building mechanisms of software caught my attention. I was surprised that even the games I used to play were programmed, and we could program a lot more exciting stuff. That’s when I realized that computer science would be my favourite subject. Knowing how few lines of code can perform complex computations enthralled me. The highlight for me was when I visited a workshop conducted by Microsoft’s regional director, and he talked about the vision of Microsoft for the next ten years. My conviction to work in this field was cemented. Learning about trending technologies and knowing the nitty-gritty behind them has been my forte ever since.

My moral compass has always led me to help people. In recent years, the world has become so apt to technology. I have always helped people who are technically deprived and come up with more efficient solutions. Software has been my point of interest ever since high school. When I realized that technologies were evolving and, with the help of technology, we could bring about changes tremendously; I decided to pursue a bachelor’s in computer science.

I dreamed of having a globally recognized degree from one of the top countries in the world. So, I planned to apply abroad for computer science and started selecting universities. I got a Presidential scholarship from a university in Canada and applied for the program. However, I got rejected as my computer science grade decline was pretty evident from the 10th and 12th mark cards. As my decision was unwavering, I pursued computer science and engineering at [College name]. I worked on my grades and enhanced my technical skills, and passed out with flying colours with "First Class with Distinction" and a GPA of **. While studying here, I built a solid foundation in computer science and was equally active in co-curricular activities.

I have worked on several projects and assisted various professors during my studies. My final year project was on *** because I was interested in innovations and technologies. I learnt about various new devices and technologies like the Internet of Things(IoT), Raspberry Pi and different electronic devices, which ultimately fueled my research interest.

After that, I joined a training centre to learn advanced programming languages, which helped me enter the industry. Later, after graduation, I joined as an IT intern at ***, one of the reputed newspaper companies in [country name], and started working as a web developer. After six months of internship, I got an offer to continue as a permanent. However, I wanted to work as a Python developer and got offers from [company name]

Later, I started working for one of the best FinTech companies in [country name], [company name], as a Python developer. I and my team started working on the research and development of new technology using the programming language Python. Since I did my project on computer vision, I have focused on the same along with ** and testing to see if someone can commit fraud. Our research was implemented in various products like ***. I worked at company name] for two years and three months, and in my spare time, I started freelancing. After resigning from [company name], as our product went live and I didn’t have any other learning curve in the project, I joined a new company called [company name] as a software engineer where I am working for a US-based client, which builds business intelligence automation using machine learning and data integration techniques.

During my industrial project, for our *** project, I did extensive research to extract document information. I went through various research papers and used Tesseract initially, but we used Microsoft Azure instead due to some issues. This was the time when my interest in Machine Learning was the highest. So I started researching Machine Learning and read a few research papers. Subsequently, for another project, I researched *** and ** as the requirement was to search for a possible list of people with similar input or false names. I have also tried my hand at sentiment analysis and chatbot in Python to learn and get to know how it works. I have also worked on computer vision for an *** project to***. We used Microsoft Azure for the same initially. My research has also extended to **.

After resolving to study abroad, I researched in various countries like the U.K, the U.S.A, Canada and other countries like Denmark, Germany, Finland, China, and Japan. While analyzing these countries' education policies and living conditions, I found  Australia to be the most suitable country for me. The internet-based research and my seniors studying there told me that the U.S.A has higher education cost because of its comprehensive courses.  Moreover, to get into universities in the USA, one should go through various exams like GMAT, GRE, and SAT  for scholarships. Hence it will take further longer to get graduated. The living expense is very much high in the U.K. because of the influence of the high exchange rate between *** and the Great Britain Pound. In addition, having a well-renowned university in the UK, I have to drop out of the decision to study in the UK as I found Australia have laws in favour of international students like the Education Service for Overseas Students (ESOS Act 2000), which is in favour of international students.

Similarly, I didn't want to learn new languages and adapt to the new climacteric conditions, so I dropped Japan, China, Denmark, Germany and Canada and other countries with non-favourable climatic and communication conditions. To get enrolled in the universities in these countries, I will have to go through language classes, and I do not think having just basic knowledge of the language will help me much. I must have proficiency which will take another year or two. And it is going to take extra years. With this majority of countries were out, and Australia met the positive condition and I finalized to study in Australia than elsewhere...

In [country name], we don’t get the opportunity to work thoroughly, especially on new technologies. We must keep moving from one technology to another according to the client’s or office’s requirements. So, I considered researching Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an MS. Student. I am pretty interested in AI, and while searching through universities and their faculties, I found [University name] and thought it would be my preferred university. I found a project called ** very interesting, carried out by ***. If I get admission to this university, I would love to work with her and explore my horizons of thinking in the same exciting field. The *** project also enthrals me, and I would like to contribute in any way possible...

After my Master’s degree, I intend to pursue a PhD. I wish to specialize in the energy and health domains. I intended to study *** in my MS along with data science knowledge. The PhD course will help me become an ideal researcher with proper and detailed knowledge of working mechanisms and appropriate algorithms. The overall knowledge will entirely help in my further research.

My short-term goal is to complete my master’s from a reputed institute where I can dilate my knowledge of the Artificial Intelligence field to work on my ideas and learn advanced concepts with hands-on implementation. I want to participate in various events related to my field, as I did at my bachelor's level, which helped me to understand and explore more related fields. Furthermore, I want to improve my leadership and entrepreneurial skills, which will help me network my future project ideas and participate in various cultural programs at the college and other social awareness programs.

My long-term goal is to open an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy and share my knowledge with university students as a part-time lecturer, followed by a professor. This will provide opportunities for many engineers to work and learn various skills in their own country. As we don’t have any specific institutions or companies to learn about artificial intelligence (AI) related courses, very few companies deal with this hot trend. There is a shortage of manpower for this demanding technology. Being in a country where no courses are taught which have great importance in the future is not a good sign, so I want to come back and establish or advance the learning curve in AI. However, this isn't easy without proper knowledge and expertise in the subject. This is where I want to contribute, which will ultimately help with the country's economic development.

My parents will sponsor me to meet my living, tuition and other miscellaneous expenses during my study period in Australia. They have an ongoing annual income of ***. In addition, they have an education loan sanctioned from ** of **.  These funds are sufficient to complete my study within the intended time frame.

I have already paid tuition fees for a year and also have paid my OSHC (Overseas  Students Health Cover) for the entire duration of my study. So  I have no financial restrictions and can study well with outstanding performance.

The MS program at [university name] is my top choice due to its international standing and the presence of distinguished faculty members. I am also eager to pursue courses under the guidance of ***. Her work in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Revolution through Evolution: A Controls Approach to Improve How Society Interacts with Electricity is inspiring, and I believe that being a part of this project will be a steep learning curve for me, as I have a powerful interest in working on similar projects in the future. I am confident I can leverage my academic and professional experience to add value to classroom discussions. This MS program is crucial to my career plan, and I look forward to this opportunity.
