City

Pokhara

Pokhara is a metropolitan city in Nepal, which serves as the capital of Gandaki Province. It is the country's largest metropolitan city in terms of area and second largest in terms of population. The city also serves as the headquarters of Kaski District. Pokhara is considered as the tourism capital of Nepal, being a base for trekkers undertaking the Annapurna Circuit through the Annapurna Conservation Area region of the Annapurna ranges in the Himalayas.

The city has a humid subtropical climate, however, the elevation keeps temperatures moderate. Temperatures in summer average between 25 and 35 °C; in winter around −2 to 15 °C. Pokhara and nearby areas receive a high amount of precipitation. Snowfall is not observed in the valley, but surrounding hills experience occasional snowfall in the winter. Summers are humid and mild and most precipitation occurs during the monsoon season. Winter and spring skies are generally clear and sunny.

It has many prestigious educational institutes and has gathered students from different parts of Nepal to seek knowledge and learn technology. Pashchimanchal Campus, one of the four constituent campuses of the Tribhuvan University Institute of Engineering in Nepal is the second-largest engineering campus after the Pulchowk Campus in Nepal. The Institute of Forestry, Pokhara Campus (IOF-PC) is one of the five technical institutes under Tribhuvan University, Nepal meets the growing demands for skilled and competent natural resource managers in the country. Pokhara University has been running various programs under Faculties of Management, Science and Technology, Health Science and Humanities, and Social Sciences. The Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS), affiliated to Kathmandu University was set up at Pokhara in 1994 with an MBBS program. It was the first private institution to establish a medical college in Nepal.

It has a major contribution to the local economy which comes from the tourism and hospitalities industry. Tourism is a major source of income for local people and the city. Many medieval era temples such as Tal Barahi Temple, Bindhyabasini, Bhadrakali, Talbarahi, Guheshwari, Sitaldevi, Gita mandir and Bhimsen temples and old Newari houses are located in the city. The city promotes two major hilltops as viewpoints to see the city and surrounding panorama: World Peace Pagoda and Sarangkot. The International Mountain Museum (IMM) was opened for the public in Ratopahiro to boost the city's tourism attractions. Other museums are Pokhara Regional Museum, Annapurna Natural History Museum and Gurkha Museum.

Biratnagar

Biratnagar is a metropolitan city in Nepal, which serves as the capital city of Province No. 1, it is the largest city in the province and also serves as the headquarters of Morang district. The city is home to the Biratnagar Jute Mills, the first large scale industry of Nepal. It also serves as an entry point to eastern Nepal as well as north-eastern India. Biratnagar is the second Nepalese city, after Janakpur, to have a connection with the Indian Railways. It is also considered to be the industrial capital of Nepal.

In Biratnagar, the wet season is oppressive and mostly cloudy, the dry season is clear, and it is hot year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 52°F to 102°F and is rarely below 48°F or above 108°F. Biratnagar's climate is classified as warm and temperate. The climate here is classified as Cwa by the Köppen-Geiger system.

Majority of the people are from the Brahmin and Kshatriya communities. The main language spoken is Nepali. Maithili is also spoken by some parts of the population. The local indigenous language is Birat Rajbanshi. Biratnagar is situated within one of the most ethnically diverse regions of Nepal, and the rural hinterland is home to a diverse cross section of communities. Most people practice Hinduism followed by Islam, Jainism, Kirat, and Christianity. During Dashain, the largest festival in the country, a large number of devotees visit the Kali Mandir, a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, that lies in the heart of the town. Krishna Janmashtami (the birthday of Krishna) is a major festival celebrated in Biratnagar. Thousands of people gather on the second day of Krishna Ashtami for the holy chariot procession which goes around the city. Chhath is also an important festival for Madhesi Hindus, dedicated to the Sun God. Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are celebrated by the Muslim community of Biratnagar. Christmas is also celebrated by a very small population of Christians.

It is the center of education in eastern of Nepal and home to Purbanchal University, Biratnagar has numerous good colleges and educational institutes including medical and engineering institutes. The medium of teaching is English in all the private schools, colleges and universities whereas Nepali is the medium of instruction in government schools up to secondary level.Purbanchal University School of Engineering & Technology (PUSET), formerly known as Science & Technology Campus, was established as a constituent campus of Purbanchal University and is the only one of its kind in the Eastern Region, imparting full-fledged information technology based curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students.

Butwal

Butwal is a sub-metropolitan city and is one of the twin cities of rapidly growing Butwal-Bhairahawa urban agglomeration in Nepal. It lies in Lumbini Province, Rupandehi District. It was given the title “Green City of Nepal 2019”. This city stands beside the bank of Tilottama or Tinau River, and at the northern edge of the Terai plain below the Siwalik Hills. Its name, Butwal was derived from Batauli Bazaar, the town's oldest residential area which is located on the western bank of the Tinau River. Butwal is a lively city comprising the panoramic views of the combination of hills and plains. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nepal for education, infrastructure, highway, marketing, health and safety, communication, trade, and banking sectors. It has highway connections to the Indian border at Sunauli and to the hilly towns in Tansen and Pokhara valley. According to census 2001, most of the population in Butwal consists of Pahari immigrants from nearby hill districts especially Palpa, Arghakhanchi, Gulmi and Syangja. There are also students, and ex-Gurkha soldiers commonly called Lahure, and a significant Madheshi population.

The climate here is characterized as, relatively high temperature and evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year. In summer, it is largely under the influence of moist, maritime airflow from the western side of the subtropical anticyclone cells over low-latitude ocean waters. Temperatures are high and can lead to warm, oppressive nights. Summers are usually somewhat wetter than winters, with much of the rainfall coming from convectional thunderstorm activity. The coldest month is usually quite mild, although frosts are not uncommon, and winter precipitation is derived primarily from frontal cyclones along the polar front.Butwal is set to be an educational hub in the Rupandehi district. The literacy rate in this city is also considered to be high. It even holds the record for top students in SEE as well as the HSEB examination in Nepal numerous times. Lumbini Engineering Management & Science College (Affiliated to Pokhara University) was established to decentralize engineering education and to reduce the compulsion of going abroad for technical education. Universal College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), affiliated with T.U and recognized by Nepal Medical Council (NMC), is considered as the pioneer institute in Nepal in the field of medicine & dentistry. Butwal Multiple Campus is one of the biggest campuses of Lumbini Zone. It offers different Bachelor’s and Master’s programs with affiliation from Tribhuvan University. Kshitiz International College (KIC), a co-educational institute affiliated to Pokhara University, has been imparting the BBA program.

Kathmandu

Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and is also densely populated in comparison to other cities. It has a multi-ethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Also known as the city of temples, the city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level in the bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu. It was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Nepal and hosts palaces, mansions and gardens of the Nepalese aristocracy.

Kathmandu Valley falls within the warm temperate zone, where the climate is fairly temperate, atypical for the region. Under Köppen's climate classification, portions of the city with lower elevations have a humid subtropical climate, while portions of the city with higher elevations generally have a subtropical highland climate. The city generally has a climate with warm days followed by cool nights and mornings.

Kathmandu is particularly famous for its religious monuments. Various temples, monasteries, and stupas adorn the city's landscape, particularly the Pashupatinath Temple and the Changu Narayan, Swayambhunath Temple are famous for their stunning, intricate religious artworks.

Pulchowk Campus, affiliated to Tribhuvan University and is considered the best engineering college all over Nepal. Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) is the best management college. College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE) is the first and best IT college in Kathmandu.

The staple food of most people in Kathmandu is dal bhat. This consists of rice and lentil soup, generally served with vegetable curries, achar and sometimes Chutney. Momo, a type of Nepali version of Tibetan dumpling, has become prominent in Nepal with many street vendors and restaurants selling it. It is one of the most popular fast foods in Kathmandu. Consumption of beef is very uncommon and considered taboo in many places. Consumption of buff meat is very common. The Muslims forbid eating buff as from Quran while Hindus eat all varieties except beef as they consider cow to be a goddess and symbol of purity.

Dharan

Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city in Sunsari District of Province No. 1, Nepal. It is situated on the foothills of the Mahabharat Range in the north with its southern tip touching the edge of the Terai. The Koshi highway runs through the heart of the city thus connecting it with the provincial capital of Biratnagar as well. Budha Subba Temple, Namaste Falls, Pindeshwor Temple, Namche Bazar, Dantakali Temple, Dharan Clock Tower, Pathivara Temple are some of the major tourist attractions of Dharan.

Dharan is called a colorful city with multi-cultural diversity. People living in this city are mostly from Sankhuwasabha, Panchthar, Ilam, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Taplegung and Khotang. This calls for multi-ethnic festivities and activities. The population mainly consists of magar, rai, tamang, etc. Dhan Naach, Dhol Nach and Chyabrung Nach are a few dances performed in this region. People residing here celebrate festivals like Dashain, Manghe Sankranti, Tihar, etc.Dharan is known for its Dal Bhat (steamed rice in a lentil soup), Pork Sekuwa, Pork Dameko, Sargemba and Aalu Nimki. Momos, Chow Mein and Wai-Wai are very popular dishes found in Dharan.

The climate here is mild, and generally warm and temperate. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. This climate is considered to be Cwa according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. The average temperature in Dharan is 23.2 °C/73.7 °F. June is the hottest month of the year.

It is emerging as an education hub in Nepal. The city has the highest number of centers of higher education in Nepal and has educational institutions such as Universities, colleges, and high schools. It is also known for BPKIHS, which is a well-known university. Also Delhi Public School is considered to be one of the best schools in Dharan. Purwanchal Campus is one of constituent campuses of Tribhuvan University (TU) and one of the associate engineering campuses of Institute of Engineering (IOE) which is a comprehensive, non-profit, autonomous institution and pioneer institution of higher education level in Nepal funded by the government of Nepal.
