An Act of Parliament created Kathmandu University (KU), an independent, nonprofit, and self-supporting public institution, in December 1991. It is a higher education facility committed to upholding the bar for academic achievement across various traditional and contemporary fields.
The university's purpose is to "deliver exceptional education for leadership." The goal is to "become a top-tier institution committed to putting science and technology at the service of humanity."
The university's mission is to meet societal demands to serve the nation, and its slogan is "from the campus to the community."
Autonomous administration, financial self-sufficiency, regular upkeep of the academic calendar, sustained trust of the international academic community, optimum contact between faculties and students, and a student-friendly environment are some of the university's widely recognised distinguishing characteristics. The University's alumni are also well-known for having significant exposure to the industry and the community, research proficiency, technology literacy, moderate to high levels of communicative ability, a spirit of cooperation and leadership, and compatibility across cultures.
The University's supreme body is the Senate. It consists of university administrators, respectable educators, government secretaries, benefactors, mayors of nearby communities, teacher and student representatives, and representatives from related organisations and businesses. The Senate is presided over by the Prime Minister, who also serves as the University's Chancellor. The Pro-Chancellor is the Minister of Education. To manage the University, the Executive Council and Academic Council create internal policies and programs. The Board of Trustees of the University, comprised of well-known individuals, including the founding fathers, is tasked with providing advice on long-term planning and creating and managing resources.
The University operates through seven Schools:
- School of Arts,
- School of Education,
- School of Engineering,
- School of Law,
