Master of Engineering in the UK: Entry Requirements

The entry requirements of different universities depend on the country and the university from where the applicant obtained their master's degree. 

The English language requirement also varies with different courses, and the students are advised to check the requirement of each university program. The following listings demonstrate the general requirement for admission into the university.

Imperial College London

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with 80% marks
  • Proof of English language proficiency via IELTS score of 6.5 overall and minimum of 6.0 in all sections or TOEFL score of 92 overall and at least 20 in all sections or PTE score of 62 overall and minimum of 56 in all sections

University of Cambridge

  • A 4-year bachelor's degree in a relevant subject with a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Proof of English language proficiency via IELTS score of 7.0 overall and minimum of 6.5 in all sections or TOEFL score of 100 overall and at least 25 in all sections.

University of Manchester

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field. The minimum academic score required will be assessed based on the quality of the university where the applicant obtained the bachelor's degree.
  • For English language requirements, any of the following can be considered:
    • IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no section below 6.0
    • TOEFL score of 92 and no section below 20
    • PTE score of 58 and no section below 50

University of Sheffield

  • A bachelor's degree equivalent in the relevant field of engineering that is equivalent to an upper second-class degree (2:1)
  • IELTS score of 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 in each band. An equivalent score of TOEFL and PTE is also accepted.

University of Oxford

  • A bachelor's degree equivalent to the UK's first-class undergraduate degree with honours
  • Minimum IELTS score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 in each band or TOEFL score of 110 with at least 22 in listening, 24 in reading, 25 in speaking, and 24 in writing.

University College London

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent (The minimum score required is country and university-specific)
  • IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each sub-test or TOEFL score of 92 with 24 in reading and writing and 20 in listening and speaking or PTE score of 62 overall and 59 in each sub-test.

University of Southampton

  • A 2:1 degree in engineering, science, or a related field
  • For proof of English language proficiency: IELTS score of 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each band. An equivalent score of TOEFL and PTE is also accepted.

Brunel University

  • A 2:2 recognized degree in engineering, science, or mathematics.
  • For proof of English language proficiency: IELTS score of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each band or TOEFL score of 77 overall with at least 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking, and 17 in writing or PTE score of 62 overall and 59 in each area.

University of Leeds

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field is equivalent to a 2:1 bachelor's degree in the UK.
  • Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no band less than 6.0 or TOEFL score of 92 overall with a minimum score of 21 in listening and reading, 22 in writing, and 23 in speaking or 64 overall with at least 60 in each section.

  • A bachelor's degree from a recognised institution equivalent to the first class or second class honours degree of the UK
