West Virginia State University, also commonly abbreviated as WVSU, is a public, historically black university located in Institute, West Virginia. After desegregation, there were gradually fewer black students at WVSU and more white ones. The student body of WVSU was 75% white and only 8% African-American as of 2017.

West Virginia State University was one of the original 19 land-grant schools and universities founded by the second Morrill Act of 1890 AD and was founded as the West Virginia Colored Institute in 1891. Since then, the campus has become more open and varied.

West Virginia State University has a 912-acre main campus located in downtown Morgantown. The Downtown Campus, the Health Sciences, and the Evansdale Campus are its three satellite campuses. Modern academic, administrative, recreational, housing, and support facilities are available on campus. Eight libraries at this university provide students with access to contemporary technology and digital resources. Additionally, the campuses offer a range of amenities for the students' comfort and safety. These consist of student sororities, police officers, and the Core Arboretum.

To improve communication between these campuses, West Virginia State University also constructed a transportation system called Personal Rapid Transit, which started operating in 1973 and provides employees and students with free trips. The institution runs two divisional campuses in Keyser and Beckley in addition to the main campus.

West Virginia State University's academic institutions, which include nine colleges and five schools, provide undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in more than 350 majors and minors. The students can pursue programs in the humanities and social sciences, engineering, law, medicine, sports sciences, pharmaceutical, nursing, and general health, as well as in the arts and sciences, agriculture, natural resources, design, business, and economics.

In addition, to providing flexible learning, it also expands various online programs. The diverse student body of West Virginia University includes people from all 50 U.S. states and 188 different nations. 29,933 students were enrolled in 2019, with 26,839 attending the Morgantown Campus. The institution employs 2,074 full-time and 693 full-time instructional faculty members. A total of $326 million in grants, loans, and other forms of financial aid were given to students in 2017.

WVSU 1890 Scholarship

The four agriculture-related degree programs offered by the university are B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Plant and Soil Science, a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Applied Chemistry, a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Agribusiness, and a B.A. in Economics with a concentration in Agricultural Economics are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

WVSU Presidential Scholarship

A merit-based grant established to honour exceptional high school graduates, the Presidential Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship and the student's federal and state subsidies will cover the tuition, fees, and room and board. The Presidential Scholarship is extendable for up to four years as long as the recipient is in good standing with the university and otherwise qualifies.

Institutional Foundation Scholarships

The amount and qualifications for each scholarship the West Virginia State University Foundation offer vary. Applicants for the West Virginia State University Foundation Scholarship must first fulfil the following conditions for eligibility:

  • The FAFSA has to be filled out and submitted.
  • Financial help needs to be organised.
  • Must enrol in school full-time (i.e., must take a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester). Only register as a student who exclusively studies online.

Yellow Jacket Scholarship

The Office of Student Scholarships will conduct an annual review of the scholarship, which is given out for eight consecutive semesters. Students must complete 24 credits between the fall and spring semesters; hours taken in the summer may, if necessary, be added to the total number of credits earned. Students must keep their institutional GPA at or above 3.0.

  • Four English (with English 12CR and practices in grammar, composition, and literature).
  • Three social studies courses covering U.S. history and studies.
  • Four Maths (three units must be Algebra I and higher or Math I or higher or transitional math for seniors is also accepted). Courses marketed as "support courses," such as Math I Lab and Math I Support, that extend the instructional period without adding new material are not accepted as fulfilling the criteria for the four introductory mathematics courses.
  • Three sciences (laboratory science, preferably including units from biology, chemistry, and physics).
  • One Art and two Languages of the World (two units of the same world language or sign language is also acceptable).
