The Toronto Metropolitan Institution (also known as TMU or Toronto Met and officially incorporated as and formerly functioning as Ryerson University) is a public research university founded in the city of Toronto in the province of Ontario in Canada. The primary campus of the university can be located within the Garden District.

However, the institution also maintains sites in other parts of Toronto. The university comprises seven academic divisions or faculties, including the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Community Services, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Faculty of Science, The Creative School, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, and the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Each of these faculties focuses on a specific academic discipline. Most of these faculties are further subdivided into various departments and schools for students to choose from. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is the university's department for offering continuing education services.

The Ryerson Institute of Technology was created in 1948 and named after Egerton Ryerson, a key contributor to the establishment of the public education system in Canada. The name of the institution was chosen in honor of Egerton Ryerson.

After his passing, his ideas were considered during the establishment of a system of residential schools for indigenous children in Canada. In 1964, the institution was renamed Ryerson Polytechnical Institute after it was reformed in accordance with provincial legislation and given a new name.

During that time period (the 1970s), the establishment was given the authority to confer a restricted number of degrees under such titles. In 1993, the educational establishment transformed into a full-fledged university and was rechristened at Ryerson Polytechnic University.

The university officially changed its name to Ryerson University in the year 2002, which was several years after the establishment of the university's school of graduate studies.

The university announced that it would change its name in 2021 due to the realization of Egerton Ryerson's involvement in the residential school system and the present acknowledgment of the harmful consequences that the residential school system has had on indigenous cultures.

In 2022, it was announced that the school would henceforth be known as Toronto Metropolitan University; however, before the announcement, some students continued to refer to the institution by its previous name, X University.

There are roughly 44,400 undergraduate students and 2,950 graduate students enrolled at the university during the 2019–20 academic year. The university is an institution that welcomes students of both genders. As of the year 2017, TMU had close to 170,000 graduates.

The TMU Bold represent the university in the Ontario Institution Athletics conference of U Sports, where they compete as part of the varsity athletics program run by the university's athletics department.
