Kathmandu School of Law

    Kathmandu School of Law

The Kathmandu School of Law is a community-based, nonprofit educational establishment that upholds its unrelenting dedication to a practical, research-based, and community-responsive legal education in the nation. It was founded in 2000 AD as an affiliate of Purbanchal University. It was conceived as part of a non-profit initiative to address Nepal's demand for legal education that is both academically solid and practically viable.

Thus, in only two decades, it has expanded the field of law and produced high-calibre legal practitioners in addition to reshaping the nation's legal education through its cutting-edge curricula and pedagogies. Since its establishment, it has been committed to supporting the goals of researchers and students from many backgrounds. Simply put, it has caused a paradigm change in legal education because of its cutting-edge techniques, which include clinical and community outreach programs in the curricula and research-based teaching methods. Thus, in terms of its purpose, methodology, calibre, and global stature, it marks a fresh beginning in the less-travelled area of legal education.

    Vision:

It aims to develop the institution into a premier institution that can help the country change into a functioning democracy based on the rule of law, human rights, and sound governance.

    Mission:

Enhance legal education for social engineering and value-based professions to advance justice.

    Objectives:

    • To provide a supportive learning environment where law students may develop their empirically-based knowledge of legal principles and competencies through an interdisciplinary approach.
    • To train lawyers who can specifically address the socioeconomic and developmental needs of the marginalised.
    • To influence Nepal's legal system so that international norms are respected and upheld.
    • To provide legal students with the knowledge and experience necessary to advocate disputes involving national interests in a global context.

    Core Values

    • Fair treatment based on fairness and equality (no discrimination based on gender, class, caste, creed, or religion; positive discrimination in favour of marginalised students through different scholarship programs)
    • Students may harvest their knowledge, develop their talents, and hone their leadership traits in a dynamic educational incubator environment thanks to student-centred learning, which gives a particular sort of intellectual freedom.
    • Learning through exploration, challenge, and reinforcement. We draw on the information generated locally and regionally to construct initiatives, research, and academic interventions. By doing so, we are expanding the body of knowledge.

KSL has produced outstanding results in university exams, government services, and Nepal Bar Council exams for many years. Many of our Bachelor's and Master's degree holders have found employment in the crucial government sector, occupying prominent positions such as Joint Secretary, Under Secretary, Deputy Director, Deputy Government Attorney, and others.

Similar to how our students did, they pursued higher education at prestigious institutions like Harvard Law School, Oxford, Cambridge, Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, University of Oslo, Notre Dame, and Sydney, among others, with the aid of fellowships and scholarships from organisations like AusAID, Fullbright, Chevening, Norwegian Aid, and others.

Regarding accomplishments abroad, KSL has established a record by dominating the Regional Rounds in 2016 and 2018 and the National Rounds of the Henry Dunant International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition for 15 consecutive years. In the same vein, we have won virtually all national-level moot court events, including the Laxman Prasad Aryal Memorial and the Bharat Raj Upreti Memorial, among others.

KSL's footprint is felt worldwide thanks to our partnerships with academic institutions under various programs, including The Kathmandu Dialogue, The Himalayan Field School, and the International Winter Residential Program on Economic, Social, and Development Rights. The Asia Pacific Master's Program echoes our extensive international partnerships with more than 100 universities worldwide. It is taught in conjunction with five academic institutions from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, China, and Thailand.
