The Purwanchal Campus of Tribhuwan University (TU) is a campus that was formerly known as the Eastern Region (ERC) Campus. Additionally, the Purwanchal Campus is an affiliate of the Institute of Engineering (IOE). The first institution of higher learning in Nepal to receive financing from the government; it is all-encompassing, operates independently, and does not make a profit.
Because it is located in IOE's eastern region, the campus is known by the term Eastern Regional Campus (ERC). This was formed in the year 1978 of the Common Era. In the beginning, this campus provided training leading to a diploma. As required by the financing and the project agreements, the university first began offering trade-level classes in the engineering specializations of mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. Since 2043 BS (1984), students have been able to enroll in three-year diploma programs in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering.
Additionally, students have enrolled in refrigeration and air-conditioning engineering programs since 2052 BS and computer and electronics engineering since 2059 BS. IOE's Purwanchal Campus was the first and only institution in the country to offer a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in Agricultural Engineering when it did so in the year 2057 BS (2000). This initiative was part of IOE's ongoing effort to upgrade its educational offerings. In the academic year 2061 BS, an additional Bachelor of Engineering program in Civil Engineering was introduced (2004).
The campus also operated under the mandate of the Government of Nepal and the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) from 2045/11/12 (BS) until 2047/2/15 (BS), when it was transferred back to the administration of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
