Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in Nepal

Saru Niraula

In Nepal, limited universities and colleges offer a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. This course is 4 years long and is spread over 8 semesters. Internal and external examinations are taken to analyze the performance of the students.

Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University are the only universities to offer a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in Nepal. TU offers this course via 4 constituent campuses, which are discussed below.

Each of these campuses has 4 seats for Mechanical Engineering.

Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Kathmandu University School of Engineering has the following specializations.

  • B.E in Mechanical Engineering (Automobile)

  • B.E in Mechanical Engineering (Design and Manufacturing)

  • B.E in Mechanical Engineering (Energy Technology)

  • B.E in Mechanical Engineering (Hydropower)

Eligibility Criteria:

No matter where you decide to study Bachelor of Mechanica- KU or TU-you must first prove your eligibility. The minimum entry requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in Nepal are:

  • Applicants must pass intermediate level/ +2 in Science with maths as a full-time paper in 11 and 12. Those who have passed a diploma in Engineering or similar courses with maths, physics and chemistry as significant subjects can also apply.

  • Depending on where they plan to study, students must appear for the Engineering entrance examination conducted by TU or KU.

Passing the entrance examination is mandatory for studying mechanical engineering at TU and KU instituted. However, just passing the entrance examination does not guarantee admission into Nepal's best engineering colleges. Students are selected based on merits.

Engineering Entrance test

Be it TU or KU, you first must appear on the entrance test if you wish to study engineering in Nepal. In general condition, this entrance test is conducted in August and September. More than 10,000 Nepali and international students take the Engineering entrance exam in Nepal. The entrance exam has 5 sections- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Engineering Aptitude.

The test used to be paper-based initially, but now it is computer-based. The entrance examination is quite strenuous, and students must prepare physically and mentally.

Several institutions in Nepal (more inside Kathmandu Valley and less outside the valley) offer engineering preparatory courses. These courses are 2 months to 1 year long and take from NPR 12,000 to NPR 25,000 for the course. Some institutions offering this test are:

  • PEA Association Pvt. Ltd., Thapathali

  • Training Nepal, Putalisadak

  • SEA, Thapathali

  • NAEE Education Centre, Patan Dhoka

  • KEI Foundation, Kupondole

  • Kanchanjanga Education Institute (KEI), Kupondole

To study in Pulchowk and other constituent campuses of TU, you need to appear on the entrance exam conducted by TU. If you wish to study at Kathmandu University School of Engineering, you need to sit on the entrance exam taken by KU.

TU Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Highlights

  • Each constituent engineering campus of TU (Pulchowk Campus, Thapathali Campus, Purbanchal and Paschimanchal Campus) offers 48 seats for mechanical engineering at the bachelor's level.

  • These colleges offer scholarships to deserving students based on their merits. For instance, among the 48 students in the class, the top students (24 students in Pulchowk and Purbanchal campus and the top 12 students in Paschimanchal and Thapathali) according to the merit list prepared from entrance results are declared regular students and their tuition fees are waived off. In such circumstances, the tuition fee for 4 years of a bachelor of mechanical engineering is less than NPR 40,000.

Workshop and laboratories

The departments of Mechanical Engineering of TU are well equipped with modern infrastructures.

  • Fluid Mechanics,

  • Hydraulic Machines,

  • Heat Engines,

  • Thermodynamics,

  • Heat Transfer,

  • Instrumentation and Control,

Evaluation

Depending upon the final aggregate percentage scored, students are awarded the following divisions each semester:

80% and above – Distinction

65%  and above – First Division

50% and above – Second Division

40% and above – Pass

Finally, the performance of 8 semesters is merged, and the transcript is generated, which offers the overall percentage of 4 of Engineering via TU.

Note that the first and the second years each contribute 20% of the aggregate BE Percentage. Likewise, each of the third year and fourth years contribute to 30% i.e.

First Year- 20%

Second Year- 20%

Third Year- 30%

Fourth Year- 30%
