Engineering has always been a popular career option among students in India. With over 15 lakh candidates appearing for various national and state-level engineering entrance exams yearly, the competition to secure a seat in top engineering colleges is intense. Therefore, it becomes crucial for students to select the right exam to appear for.

In India, around 30 engineering entrance exams are conducted for admission to engineering courses. These tests are regarded as a route to famous engineering schools like the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Here are the top 10 engineering entrance exams in India that students can consider for admission to BTech and other allied courses.

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is considered one of India's most popular and widely recognized engineering entrance exams. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts it twice a year, in January and April. The examination is an online computer-based test and is a gateway to top engineering colleges in India, including the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). Two papers make up the JEE Main exam: Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech. programs and Paper 2 for B.Arch./B.Planning programs. Depending on their qualifications and interests, candidates can show up for either one or both papers during the exam's various sessions.

JEE Advanced

The second stage of the JEE exam, known as JEE Advanced, is regarded as one of India's most difficult engineering entrance exams. On a rotating basis, one of the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) conducts it once a year. Only the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rank holders are permitted to take the JEE Advanced exam. The exam pattern of JEE Advanced includes two compulsory papers of three hours each, consisting of objective-type questions covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam is conducted in two sessions, and candidates can attempt both papers in either English or Hindi. The exam is a gateway to the prestigious IITs and the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad.

BITS Admission Test (BITSAT)

BITS Admission Test (BITSAT) is a computer-based exam conducted by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, for admission to its integrated first-degree programs. The online exam comprises four sections - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology, English proficiency and logical reasoning. The exam lasts three hours, and each section has a different number of questions. BITSAT also has a negative marking system, where one mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.

VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE)

VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) for admission to its engineering courses. The online exam comprises four sections - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology, and English. The exam lasts two and a half hours, and there are a total of 125 questions. VITEEE does not have any negative marking system. The exam is held in multiple sessions, and candidates can choose any one session at their convenience.

Manipal Entrance Test (MET)

For students seeking admission to its engineering programs, Manipal Entrance Test (MET) is administered by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English comprise the four components of the online exam. There are 200 multiple-choice questions in all the two-and-a-half-hour-long exams. Every question in each segment of the MET exam is worth one mark, and there are 50 questions. Manipal University in Jaipur, Manipal Institute of Technology in Manipal, and Manipal Institute of Technology in Sikkim all recognize MET scores.

SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE)

SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE) is conducted by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology for admission to its engineering courses. The online exam comprises five sections - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology, English, and Aptitude. The exam lasts two and a half hours and it consists of a total of 125 multiple-choice questions. The exam pattern of SRMJEEE is such that Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology have 35 questions each, while English and Aptitude have 10 questions each. SRMJEEE scores are accepted by SRM Institute of Science and Technology, SRM University, AP - Amaravati, and SRM University, Haryana.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE)

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE) is conducted by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology for admission to its engineering courses. The online exam consists of three sections - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The duration of the exam is three hours, and it comprises a total of 120 multiple-choice questions. The exam pattern of KIITEE is such that Physics and Chemistry have 40 questions each, while Mathematics has 40 questions. KIITEE scores are accepted by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar.

Amrita Entrance Examination-Engineering (AEEE)

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham conducts Amrita Entrance Examination-Engineering (AEEE) for admission to its engineering courses. The online exam consists of three sections - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam lasts two and a half hours, and it comprises a total of 90 multiple-choice questions.
