Amidst countless rumours that Australia won’t welcome international students until 2024, Victoria has decided to uplift the travel restrictions and welcome foreign students. 

These travel rules apply to Western Australian cities- Perth and Peel regions. As of current circumstances, Victoria will soon become an orange zone since the strict restrictions are relaxed and students are allowed to enter the state under safety precautions. 

The safety precautions require the students to stay in 14 days of quarantine/ isolation. The isolation period will end after the students or others test negative for the COVID-19 test after the 14-day isolation period. 

Victoria to accept foreign students in May

If the students and other foreign arrivals fit the economic criteria, Victoria plans to accept them. 

Acting Premier James Merlino clarified Victoria’s intention to relax the restrictions to the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison. He mentioned Victoria’s intention to  “accept the arrival of key international economic cohorts to support Australia’s economic recovery” 

As per this plan, from May 24, foreign students, event organizers, and actors who fit the economic criteria can travel to Victoria. 

Mr Merlino also added the consistent intention to welcome international students after the circumstances were safe and reasonable. 

One reason Victoria opened its border for international arrivals is the successful staging of the Australian Open.  

As a part of welcoming international arrivals, Victoria has consulted well with public health experts. After it, Victoria proposed a dedicated quarantine program for international students and other economic cohorts. 

No cases of locally acquired coronavirus have been recorded in Victoria for 2 months. This has also motivated Victoria to open its borders.
