The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India founded XIC in 1969 to promote knowledge and professionalism in the media. It is currently handled by the Bombay Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

The Jesuit educational system emphasises the complete person as training not just for a job but also for life. It fosters an appreciation for learning as a journey of self-discovery, which may be both joyful and freeing.
