The Institution of Manchester is a red-brick university, a product of the late-nineteenth-century civic university movement. Following the merging of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester in 2004, the present University of Manchester was founded. The Mechanics Institute was established in 1824 as the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
