Tampere University (Finnish: Tampereen yliopisto, abbreviated TAU) is a Finnish university that was formed on January 1, 2019 AD, by the merging of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology.

Tampere University is a public university in the city of Tampere, Finland. The university has 20,178 degree students and 1,981 personnel and provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programs.

Since the late nineteenth century, Tampere has been Finland's most important industrial hub. Agathon Meurman, a Finnish senate member, had stressed the necessity for a technical higher education institution as early as the mid-nineteenth century.

Nonetheless, even after the war, all technical higher education was performed at the Helsinki University of Technology. In 1965, Finland's President, Urho Kekkonen, signed an order creating a Tampere branch of the Helsinki University of Technology. The school opened the following year. Tampere Institution of Technology was established as an autonomous university in 1972.

The Tampere3 merger process began in 2014 AD when vuorineuvos Stig Gustavson invited Tampere's higher education institutions to a reform meeting. The two universities have traditionally maintained strong relationships, and collaboration in economics, computer science, biotechnology, and medical technology was frequent. As a result, integrating the universities has been proposed several times.

Tampere University declared in 2021 that it is looking to sell a significant portion of its property. By 2030, the plan is to shrink farms by 25%. The University Library will be closed. Faculty, employees, and students were outraged by the news, believing there was a lack of openness in the design of the decision and that their perspectives were not heard.

Tampere University is divided into seven faculties, each focusing on a particular study field. Tampere University's faculties comprise of Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Business, the Faculty of Education and Culture, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, the Faculty of Built Environment, the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Tampere University is mainly a research institution, whereas Tampere University of Applied Sciences is primarily concerned with development. According to the University, its goal is to create an internationally known research community in technology, health, and social research. At the Institute of Biosciences and Medical Technology, pre-merger multidisciplinary collaboration was mainly done between signal processing, biotechnology, and medical technology (BioMediTech).
