Northern Institution of Applied Arts and Technology, abbreviated as Northern College, is an applied arts and technology college in Northern Ontario. The catchment region of the institution is 58,000 square miles (150,200 square kilometers).

In Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Moosonee, and Temiskaming Shores, four campuses serve over 65 towns in Northeastern Ontario (Haileybury). The annual enrollment is around 1,500 full-time students.

Part-time and continuing education enrollment reaches 11,000 students per year. Northern Institution also houses the Haileybury School of Mines, founded in 1912 and predates the college.

Northern College provides career-enhancing education in Northern Ontario's great and vast wilderness, providing on-site, distance, and hybrid education alternatives for students seeking flexible and meaningful online learning possibilities.

The College offers accessible education options and services to meet the needs of a diverse set of learners, including full-time and part-time study, online or in-person studies, and a range of program durations that equip students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed for a successful and fulfilling career in an ever-changing world.

All post-secondary programs equip learners with the education and skills required for jobs in the fields of Business and Office Administration, Engineering Technology, Community Services and Trades, Health Sciences and Emergency Services, Veterinary Sciences, and Welding Engineering Technology.

It provides corporate and industry training opportunities, customized training courses, and general interest skills learning through Northern Training Division.

History

Northern College was founded in 1967 as part of the development of Ontario's college system. On May 21, 1965, colleges of applied arts and technology were formed. It is a college of applied arts and technology in Ontario.

The school was established in 1967 as part of a provincial commitment to developing several similar institutions to deliver career-oriented diploma and certificate courses and continuing education programs to towns around Ontario.

Kirkland Lake was the first campus building, followed by Porcupine, Haileybury, and Moosonee, formerly the James Bay Education Centre.

Sylvia Martin created Northern College's tartan.
