Newcastle University is a public research university in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. It has branches in Singapore and Malaysia. The institution is a red-brick university and a member of the Russell Group, an alliance of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom.
The institution was created in 1834 by the School of Medicine and Surgery and in 1871 by the College of Physical Science. The more significant part of the federal University of Durham was formed by these two colleges, with the Durham Colleges comprising the other.
&nbsp;In 1937, the Newcastle colleges combined to establish King's College. Following an Act of Parliament, King's College renamed the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963.
The university is divided into three faculties: the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty, the Medical Sciences Faculty, and the Science, Agriculture, and Engineering Faculty. The university provides around 175 full-time undergraduate degree programs in various subject areas encompassing arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine, as well as approximately 340 postgraduate teaching and research programs in various disciplines.
The institution's annual income for 2020-21 was &pound;523.6 million, with a research grant and contract income of &pound;99.6 million and an expenditure of &pound;518.9 million. Newcastle University now boasts one of the most extensive EU research portfolios in the United Kingdom.
