King's College London (King's or KCL) is an English public research university. King's was founded by royal charter in 1829, with King George IV and the Duke of Wellington as patrons. King's was one of the two founding colleges of the University of London in 1836. It is one of England's oldest university-level institutions.
In the late twentieth century, King's expanded through a series of mergers, including Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea College of Science and Technology, the Institute of Psychiatry, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals' United Medical and Dental Schools, and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery.
King's has five sites: the ancient Strand Campus in downtown London, three additional campuses along the Thames, and one in Denmark Hill in south London. It also has offices in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, for professional military education and Newquay, Cornwall, for its information service centre.
In 2020/21, King's earned £1 billion in total revenue, £188.0 million of which came from research grants and contracts. It boasts the fourth-biggest endowment of any UK institution and the largest in London.
In terms of overall enrollment, it is the 12th largest university in the United Kingdom. Its academic activities are organised under nine faculties, split into many departments, centres, and research divisions.
The Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association and the Russell Group are all academic organisations that King's is a part of. Six Medical Research Council institutes are based at King's.
The university is a founding member of the King's Health Partners academic health sciences centre, the Francis Crick Institute, and MedCity. It is the largest European centre for graduate and post-graduate medical education and biomedical research by many students.
The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is the world's first nursing school. King's is often recognised as part of the "golden triangle" of Oxford, Cambridge, and London universities. King has frequently enjoyed royal sponsorship since its inception, with the late Queen Elizabeth II serving as a patron.
14 Nobel laureates, contributors to the discovery of DNA structure, Hepatitis C, the Hepatitis D genome, and the Higgs boson, pioneers of in-vitro fertilisation, stem cell/mammal cloning, and the modern hospice movement, and key researchers advancing radar, radio, television, and mobile phones are among King's alumni and staff.
Alumni include presidents of state, governments, and international organisations; nineteen current members of the House of Commons and seventeen current members of the House of Lords; and three Oscars, three Grammys, and one Emmy.
