    Established on: 1965

    The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) was launched on August 17, 1965, by the then-Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Indira Gandhi, with a modest team that included two UNESCO experts. The Institute organised training sessions in its early years, mainly for Central Information Service Officers, and conducted small-scale research projects.

    For middle-level working journalists from Afro-Asian nations, a significant international training program called the Post-graduate Diploma Course in Journalism for Developing Countries was launched in 1969. To address the educational demands of communication professionals working in different media/publicity outfits of the central/state governments and public sector organisations, the Institute added a variety of specialised short courses of one week to three months. Over the years, IIMC has expanded and now offers regular Post-graduate Diploma Courses.


    The Indian Institute of Mass Communication will establish international media education, research, extension, and training standards while utilising cutting-edge technology to create a knowledge-driven information society that supports participatory democracy, human empowerment, and tolerance.

The IIMC differs from other mass communication training centres in this country and elsewhere in that its training programs have been specifically designed to satisfy the demands of emerging nations. Additionally, this provides our graduates with a unique identity and personality.

    The IIMC takes pride in its position in research, education, and mass communication. This is also reflected in the numerous evaluation studies that the media and professional organisations conduct on an annual basis.

    In the last ten years, IIMC has increased its academic offerings and launched a variety of specialised programs to fulfil the growing need for skilled labour in the media and communication sector. Additionally, IIMC works hard to continually improve its programs to address the difficulties presented by market advancements. Every year, the curricula are examined to make the necessary adjustments to keep them current. 

    The IIMC Society manages the Institute, an independent organisation authorised by the Societies Registration Act of 1867. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, provides funding. The Institute is governed by the Executive Council, which is chaired by a chairman and includes the director general of the Institute, faculty representatives, and prominent media figures.

    Based on their achievement in the entrance exam as well as their achievement during the session, IIMC Students are awarded a number of Scholarships. Students in need are also given free transportation.
