Edge Hill University is a public university with a campus in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. Edge Hill Institution was founded in 1885 as England's first non-denominational teacher-training college for women before admitting its first male students in 1959. The Privy Council gave Edge Hill Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2005, and it became Edge Hill University on May 18, 2006.
The University comprises three faculties that educate at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels: Arts and Sciences, Education, and Health and Social Care.
Edge Hill University has been awarded Gold, the highest grade in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), for regularly delivering "excellent teaching, learning, and results for its students."
A Global Teaching Excellence Spotlight Award was also given to 'the level of support and engagement infrastructure for students.'
History
Edge Hill College opened in Liverpool in 1885 as the first non-denominational teacher-training college for women.
From its origins as a specialist institution with 41 female trainee teachers, Edge Hill now has almost 10,000 full-time students, another 3,000 part-time students in a wide range of undergraduate programs, and nearly 5,000 full- and part-time postgraduate students.
