Courtauld Institute of Arts

    Courtauld Institute of Arts
    Established on: 1930

The Courtauld Institute of Art, colloquially known as The Courtauld, is a self-governing institution of the University of London specialising in art history and conservation. It is one of the world's most prominent specialised institutions for studying art history. It is well-known for producing a disproportionate number of notable museum directors from its tiny alumni group.

The Courtauld Gallery houses the art collection most recognised for its French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. The Courtauld Institute of Art is located at Somerset House on the Strand in London. The Courtauld Institute of Art's teaching and research functions were temporarily relocated to Vernon Square in London in 2019 while its Somerset House campus underwent a significant renovation project.

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the primary institution in the United Kingdom for researching the history and conservation of art and architecture. Each year, it educates around 400 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The University of London awards degrees.

In The Guardian's 2011 University Guide, The Courtauld was placed top in the United Kingdom for History and History of Art. This ranking was confirmed for research quality in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. According to the Independent, it is "arguably the world's most distinguished speciality college for the study of art history."

In The Guardian's 2017 University Guide, The Courtauld Institute of Art was named top in the United Kingdom for History and History of Art.

The Courtauld has two photographic libraries that began as private collections of two benefactors: the Conway Library, named after Lord Conway of Allington, covers architecture, architectural drawings, sculpture, and illuminated manuscripts, and the Witt Library, named after Sir Robert Witt, covers paintings, drawings, and engravings and contains over two million reproductions of works by over 70,000 artists.

The Witt Library declared in 2009 that it would no longer add new material to its collection. As part of Courtauld Connects, a huge digitisation initiative that will make both Witt and Conway artefacts available online beginning in 2017.

The book library houses one of the most comprehensive collections of art history books and periodicals, and there is also a slide library, a video library, and an IT suite. Catalogues for exhibitions in the United Kingdom.
