The Central Department of Chemistry, Tribhuvan University, created in 1965, was one of the first science departments established by Tribhuvan University as a branch of the Tri-Chandra Campus for the commencement of an intensive program of Science in Nepal, only providing the course in Organic Chemistry at the time.
The chemistry department continues to develop and expand its reach, with students now enrolled for Masters in Chemistry degrees, and as the chief authority, organizing entrance tests, enrolling students and running research activities. It is a leader and pioneer in several multidisciplinary disciplines and chemical variants across the country, and it is affiliated. It has expanded to include branches in Bharatpur, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Tri-Chandra College, and, most recently, ASCOL.
Tribhuvan University was formed in 1959 with the passage of the Tribhuvan University Act. On July 14, 1959, TU began teaching, research, and other academic activities. However, the teaching of chemistry in Nepal started in 1921, with the commencement of the Intermediate of Science (I.Sc.) program at Tri-Chandra College. In 1947, it was promoted to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). The first master's degree in chemistry was awarded on November 28, 1965, at Tri-Chandra College, with the commencement of an organic chemistry curriculum. The initiative was led by Late Professor Prasanna Man Singh Pradhan, the head of Tri-Chandra College's Chemistry Department at the time. This significant event also paved the way for developing chemical research projects in Nepal.
The current chemistry building on the university campus was built on August 17, 1966, and was dedicated on July 16, 1967. The Central Department of Chemistry began operations in its new facility on the university property. Inorganic and physical chemistry master's degree programs were established in 1966 and 1967. Since its inception, the department has added new courses in various disciplines each year. Biochemistry, Natural Product Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Nanotechnology, Polymer Science, and so on are among the most recent. Since 2013, the department has used a semester system, which significant schools in Nepal previously used.
The Central Department of Chemistry has been at the forefront of establishing and advancing Chemistry Education and Research in Nepal since its foundation. Graduates of this Department have found employment in academics and enterprises on a national and worldwide scale. The Central Department of Chemistry's essential functions and goals are:
- To develop highly trained Chemistry personnel with M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees.
- To undertake postdoctoral research and encourage chemistry research and allied disciplines.
- To enhance and update the University's Chemistry curriculum in compliance with national requirements while maintaining international standards.
- to foster relationships with major national and international chemistry institutes
- To strengthen ties between governmental and non-governmental groups involved in chemistry.
- To give consulting services in a variety of fields of chemistry.
