The Cape Breton Institution (CBU) is a public institution in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. The university welcomes students of both sexes and primarily emphasizes the education of first-year students.

It is the only post-secondary educational institution that confers degrees inside the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, which may be found on Cape Breton Island. The establishment of the university was made possible by the Cape Breton Institution Act, which was given the go-ahead by the House of Assembly in the province of Nova Scotia.

Before this, the University College of Cape Breton Act was the legislation that laid the groundwork for the establishment of CBU (amended). On May 27, 1995, the University College of Cape Breton was awarded its coat of arms, and at that time, it was registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority.

The Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Association of Atlantic Universities, Universities Canada, and Colleges and Institutes Canada all count Cape Breton University as a regular (full) member institution. In addition, CBU is an active participant in the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CICan) activities.

Cape Breton University is at the forefront of forging new ground in innovation and thought leadership to establish a sustainable future for Cape Breton Island and give students an educational experience that is on par with those found elsewhere.

Roughly 5,000 students attend Cape Breton University (CBU), located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. These students come from more than 50 different countries all over the world. In addition to this, it is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery, vibrant cultures, and welcoming communities.

CBU is committed to the continuous expansion of Cape Breton Island, the development of forward-thinking projects for economic development and sustainability, and the promotion of Indigenous educational leadership. These goals will be accomplished via three main areas of focus:

The undergraduate curriculum at CBU is the primary focus of the university's programs in liberal arts, natural sciences, business, medicine, and other professional disciplines of study.

CBU is a university that is dedicated to the quality of teaching and learning. As a result, it provides its students with great opportunities for experiential learning and undergraduate research while maintaining an excellent academic environment.

CBU's programs, which include various academic fields, consistently get ratings far better than the national standards for interaction between professors and students and service learning.

One characteristic that sets Cape Breton University apart from other schools is its multicultural student population, which contributes significantly to the university's strong sense of community.
