St. Ambrose University was founded in 1882 by the Diocese of Davenport and is steeped in tradition and prestige. Its Catholic identity is reflected in its personnel and activities, as well as its ecumenical outlook and legacy of service.

The current organization of the University, which went into effect on July 1, 1988, contains three colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, and the College of Human Services.
