India's higher education system has expanded quickly over the past few decades, which is not surprising given that the country has the second-largest population and a rapidly expanding and significant economy. 

After China and the US, India today boasts one of the largest higher education systems in the world, and from the outside, it may appear to be one of the most complicated. 

There are countless colleges and universities in India, many of which are state-run while others are private. These institutions range widely in type, size, specialty, and origin.

Top Universities in India, NIRF rankings for 2022, have been made public. IISc Bangalore has maintained first place for a seventh consecutive year.

In the recently revealed NIRF Rankings for India's Top Universities, IISc Bangalore has again taken the top spot. Following IISc Bangalore in the NIRF rankings is Jawaharlal Nehru University at number two, Jamia Millia Islamia at number three, Jadavpur University in Kolkata at number four, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore at number five.

Most universities that made it into the top 10 in the Top Universities in India list were also included in the rankings from 2021. Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, has improved significantly from the previous year, moving from rank 13 in 2021 to number 9 in 2022.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

IISc Bangalore, one of India's Top Universities for cutting-edge scientific and technical research and education, has won the NIRF Ranking 2021 with a great overall score of 83.57. There are several divisions within the institute, including the Division of Interdisciplinary Research, Division of Biological Sciences, Division of Chemical Sciences, Division of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, Division of Electrical Sciences, and Division of Mechanical Sciences. Students can choose from a range of science courses in these divisions.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

Students interested in studying the humanities frequently choose JNU, one of India's finest colleges. The University Grants Commission has named numerous academic centers at the university "Centres of Excellence" (UGC). JNU came in second with a score of 68.47, earning them the position.

The university offers undergraduate and graduate courses to students in several schools, including the School of Arts & Aesthetics, School of Biotechnology, School of Computational and Integrative Sciences, School of Computer and Systems Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Environmental Sciences, School of International Studies, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, School of Life Sciences, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurs.

Jamia Milia Islamia

The University, Jamia Milia Islamia, or JMI for short, is a prestigious institution of higher learning with its headquarters in Delhi. The UGC gave its blessing to its establishment in 1920. It is accredited with an "A" Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) (NAAC). Jamia Milia Islamia is ranked third among universities with a 65.91 score.

Jadavpur University

Jodavar University, one of India's top universities, was established in 1955 and is well known for its technology, science, and arts programs. The University is a semi-residential university with two campuses that total 58 acres each: Salt Lake and Jadavpur (spread across 26). Courses in the humanities, sciences, engineering, and technology are available to Jadavpur University students. With a score of 65.37, Jadavpur University is ranked number four in the university category of the NIRF Ranking 2022.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

One of the top universities in India is Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary research institution. The institution is spread across six campuses in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. A few of the schools and departments under which the university offers students a range of courses include the Centre for Allied Health Sciences, School of Arts & Science, School of Ayurveda, School of Biotechnology, School of Business, Department of Communication, School of Dentistry, School of Education, School of Engineering, Medicine, Centre for Nanosciences, College of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and Department of Social Work. Ranking fifth with a score of 63.40 was Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

The research-focused courses that BHU, a highly regarded university, offers in the Humanities and Sciences streams are well renowned. The university has six centers for advanced study, 10 departments that the Special Assistance Program covers, and many specialized research centers. The organization calls itself the largest residential university in Asia. The 1,300-acre main campus of this university is its overall size. BHU scored 63.20, which put them in the sixth position.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education,

In the Indian state of Karnataka, there is a deemed-to-be-university called Manipal University. The Manipal Academy of Higher Education was the previous name of this university. Additionally, the institution has offshore campuses in Dubai, Malaysia, Bangalore, and Mangalore. Nursing, dental, and medical programs are available at the university's Mangalore campus. Courses in regenerative medicine are offered at the Bangalore campus. The Dubai site offers engineering, management, and architecture courses, while the Melaka (Malaysia) campus offers degrees in medicine and dentistry. Manipal Academy of Higher Education scored 62.84, placing it seventh among Universities.

Calcutta University

The Calcutta University was founded in 1854 and was one of the first educational institutions in India. Through faculties and institutes like the Institute of Agricultural Science, the Faculty Council for Post-Graduate Studies in the Arts, the Faculty Council for Post-Graduate Studies in the Commerce, Social Welfare, and Business Management, the Faculty Council for Post-Graduate Studies in the Education, Journalism, and Library Science, and the Faculty Council for Post-Graduate Studies in English, the university offers students a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The NIRF placed Calcutta University in eighth place with a score of 62.23.

Vellore Institute of Technology

Under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, the Vellore Engineering College, the forerunner to the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), was established in 1984. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred university status to Vellore Engineering College in 2001. VIT received a 61.77, ranking it ninth in the NIRF.

 University of Hyderabad (UoH)

One of India's top postgraduate teaching and research universities in Hyderabad University, which is located in Telangana. The schools under which the university offers a variety of undergraduate programs include the College of Integrated Studies, School of Computer and Information Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, School of Economics, School of Life Sciences, School of Mathematics & Statistics, School of Physics, School of Chemistry, School of Medical Sciences, School of Management Studies, School of Engineering Sciences, and School of Life Sciences. The University of Hawaii came in at number 10 in the university category of the NIRF Rankings for 2021, with a score of 61.71.
