CAT exam vs GRE

CAT (Common Admission Test) and GRE (Graduate Record Examination) are widely recognised standardised tests for pursuing higher education in management or business-related fields. While CAT is primarily designed for admission to MBA programs in India, GRE is accepted by various business schools globally, including those in India.

Here are some key differences between the CAT exam and GRE:

    • Exam structure: CAT exam consists of three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. On the other hand, GRE has six sections: one Analytical Writing section, two Verbal Reasoning sections, two Quantitative Reasoning sections, and an unscored research or experimental section.
    • Exam duration: The CAT exam lasts 180 minutes (three hours), while the GRE lasts 3 and 45 minutes.
    • Exam format: CAT exam is a computer-based test that requires candidates to answer multiple-choice questions. On the other hand, GRE is a computer-delivered test that includes multiple-choice and non-multiple-choice questions.
    • Scoring: The CAT exam is scored out of 300, with each section carrying 100 marks. GRE is scored out of 340, with each section carrying a maximum of 170 marks.
    • Acceptance: CAT scores are only accepted by Indian business schools, while GRE scores are accepted by various international business schools, including some in India.
    • Test frequency: The CAT exam is conducted once a year, while the GRE can be taken throughout the year at designated test centres.
