India's hospitality and tourism industry significantly contribute to the country's economy. As a result, there is a high demand for skilled professionals in this field, and the hotel management option after class 12 is a popular choice among students.

According to rankings released by Outlook and India Today, several Institute of Hotel Management (IHMs) are among the top hotel management colleges in the country. Six IHMs were listed among the top 10 in the Outlook ranking, and seven IHMs were present in the India Today ranking.

These rankings are a testament to the quality of education and training provided by IHMs, which are known for their excellence in the field of hotel management.

The first Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) was established in Mumbai in 1954, and since then, the number of items in the country has grown significantly. There are 71 IHMs in India, including 21 Central Institutes of Hotel Management, 25 State Government Institutes of Hotel Management (SIHMs), one Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), and 24 Private Institutes of Hotel Management.

Admission to these colleges is based on the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE), a national-level entrance test for aspiring candidates in hotel management.

The NCHM JEE is conducted by the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) and is a requirement for admission to most IHMs and other hotel management colleges in the country.

Institute of Hotel Management: Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet a set of requirements established by federal, state, and private institutions to be admitted to IHMs.

  • The candidate must be an Indian national.
  • A candidate must have completed class 10+2 from an accredited board or have an equivalent degree with at least 50% of the possible points.
  • As the college requires, a candidate must have completed NCHM JEE 2022 with a good mark.

IHMs Courses: Admission

Admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses at the Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) is based on the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE), which has different syllabi for exams at both levels.

Admission to diploma and craftsmanship courses at IHMs is based solely on a candidate's merit in class 12, where English must have been studied as a subject. The application form for IHM admissions in diploma and craftsmanship courses is usually released on the respective college website in May. The course session begins in July-August each year. 

Admission to PG diploma courses at IHMs is based on a candidate's merit in their graduation. The NCHM JEE exam is a computer-based test for the BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration and the MSc in Hospitality Administration course.
