The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level exam that assesses the mastery of several undergraduate topics in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, and Arts. It is a computer-based test (CBT) organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
IISc Bangalore and seven IITs (IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Guwahati) will administer the test on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI).
A qualified GATE score can be used to apply for admission and financial aid to:
- Master's programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, and Arts
- Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science in institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies.
Some universities and institutes utilize GATE scores to admit students who do not qualify for an MoE scholarship or assistantship.
Furthermore, several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use the GATE score in their hiring procedure.
There will be two new papers for the GATE 2023 exam: Marine Engineering & Naval Architecture and Geomatics Engineering.
GATE 2023 will be held at the national level in India by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Every year, the GATE test is rotated between IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Guwahati.
Every year there, several changes are made to the GATE exam. These are some significant changes in GATE 2023:
- Increased GATE 2023 Application Fee for all category students. The revised application fee for Female/ SC/ ST/ PwD candidates is Rs. 850, while all other candidates are required to pay Rs. 1700 as GATE 2023 Application Fee.
- GATE 2023 Two-Paper Combination Revised. Just like last year, this year also, the two paper combinations have been revised for most of the major subjects.
- Increase in the number of GATE 2023 Exam Cities. IIT Kanpur will conduct GATE 2023 in India and cities outside India. The number of GATE 2023 exam cities in India has increased from 203 (in 2022) to 219 (in 2023).
- Revised GATE 2023 Exam Shift. GATE is usually conducted in two shifts with timings- 9 AM to 12 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM. IIT Kanpur has, however, revised the shift timings for GATE 2023. The exam will now be conducted from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

Eligibility Criteria( for national students)
To apply for the GATE entrance test, a candidate must have one of the following qualifications.
- BE/B. Tech/B. Pharmacist
- B.Arch B.Sc (Research)/B.S Professional Society Examination (B.E./B. Tech/B. Arch)
- M.Sc./M.A./MCA or an equivalent degree
- M.E./M.Tech. Integrated (Post – B.Sc)
- M.Sc./B.S.-M.S. Integrated
- M.E./M.Tech. Integrated or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)
- No minimum pass percentage is defined.
- No age limit is defined.
Eligibility Criteria (International Students)
GATE is open to candidates residing in Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Candidates from these nations must have finished or be in the final year or pre-final year of a bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, or equivalent.
Application procedure
- Step 1: Go to the GATE official website.
- Step 2: To register, applicants must go to the Home Page and click the "Register Here" link.
- Step 3: Enter your name, personal information, email address, phone number, and so on.
- Step 4: Candidates will be sent a GOAP enrollment ID to their registered email address.
- Step 5: Now login with your enrolment ID/Email ID and password.
- Step 6: Fill in any remaining needed and requested information to conclude your transaction.
- Step 7: Double-check all the information and click the "Submit" button.
- Step 8: Attach a passport-sized image and your signature in a jpg file.
- Step 9: Submit the application fee for your category.
- Step 10: Once the confirmation page appears on your computer screen, print it and store it safely for future reference.
