University Grants Commission (UGC) identified several colleges in India that had high-quality teaching and research standards, achieved through the collaboration of human and physical resources in innovative ways and had high potential for academic excellence. To recognise and support these colleges, UGC introduced a new scheme during the X Plan period called "Colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPE)", the main goal of which was to aid the shortlisted colleges in achieving excellence in teaching and to encourage research culture in these colleges.
The colleges selected under the CPE scheme were provided additional funds by UGC to improve their infrastructure, which would further help achieve academic excellence. The UGC also decided to continue the scheme during the XI and XII Plan periods. However, during the XII Plan period, UGC introduced another component to the task called "Colleges of Excellence (C.E.)". This component aims to help the already identified colleges to achieve excellence in a more defined way.
According to the UGC annual report for 2015-2016, on March 31, 2016, 296 colleges were designated as "Colleges with Potential for Excellence", and 14 colleges received the designation of "Colleges of Excellence". The list of the 14 colleges that were given the status of "Colleges of Excellence" is provided, including the duration of their designation and the universities they are affiliated with.
