Master of Music in Australia: Course Guide

Academic Requirement:

A high school degree comparable to the Australian year 12 degree with a score that is equivalent to 70 to 80 ATAR (60 to 75%)

Prerequisite 

Some universities require applicants to have preexisting knowledge of music that can be demonstrated through certified courses in music or experience.

Audition

Several universities require applicants to audition to enter the bachelor of music program in Australia. The audition may be e-audition through a music video, live recording, or live auditioning through the phone.

English language requirement:

As with all bachelor courses, for entry into the bachelor's degree in Australia, applicants need to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language, which can be done through any of the following test scores.

  • IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each band 
  • TOEFL score of 70 to 80 overall, with at least 18 to 21 in writing, 18 to 20 in speaking, and 13 to 18 in reading and listening.
  • PTE score of 50 to 58 with at least 42 to 50 in each test section.

Alternative Pathways and Diploma of Music

Several universities provide alternative pathways for entry into the bachelor of music program for those applicants who do not meet the necessary entry requirement. A diploma in music is a less demanding and more affordable option to a bachelor's degree that also provides a pathway into the bachelor program.

Academic Requirements:

Any of the following may be used to satisfy the entry requirements into the master of music program in Australia.

  • A bachelor's degree with honours in a relevant field with a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0
  • A master's degree in the same field with a thesis component
  • A bachelor's degree in any field and significant work experience and publications

Additional requirements:

Some of the specialization tracks in the master of music program have an additional requirement that must be fulfilled to become eligible for the specialization course.

  • A portfolio of creative works must be submitted to enter the music composition specialization.
  • To enter the music education specialization, one must have completed some courses related to education in their undergraduate study.
  • Master of music with performance concentration requires auditioning.

English language requirement:

All international applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency. Any of the following test scores can be used to demonstrate proficiency in English.
