Our Film Studies Joint Honours course links the criticism and history of film to the core concerns of a range of other subjects. If you are fascinated by film, but want to combine your passion with another area of study, the Joint Honours route is the perfect choice.

Subjects include Creative Writing, English, Journalism, or Media and Communication. Each of these options functions as a carefully designed programme of study, which allows you to focus on the films you love, while also developing knowledge and skills in an area of your choice.

Joint degree options:

Creative Writing and Film Studies combines different kinds of writing skills with a focus on cinema, and emphasises screenwriting.

English Language and Film Studies draws on expertise from our respected team of adaptation specialists, focusing on the relationship between film and fiction.

Film Studies and Journalism allows you to combine vocational journalism skills with film news reporting and film criticism.

Film Studies and Media and Communication focuses on the role played by cinema in the broader media environment.

 

 

Since graduating from DMU, Keiran has created his own Film Production Company, ImageNova, and has praised the blend of theoretical and practical projects of his course. The course provides a broad grounding in film history, criticism, practice and industry skills. On graduation, you may use the skills you have gained to pursue a variety of careers in the film and cultural industries or beyond, or go on to study or research at postgraduate level.

Over the past five years, graduates from our joint honours courses have gone on to work for employers such as BBC Films, BBC Sport and Odeon Entertainment. They work in roles such as film and television production staff and researchers, writers for film news media, public relations writers and executives, film journalists in print and online, including Little White Lies magazine, independent filmmakers and camera-people, commercial managers, and as teachers and academics.
