New Zealand is one of the most sought-after destinations by students looking for quality education in world-recognized universities.

Students who wish to study a full-time course for more than three months must apply for a student visa. The process may seem complicated, but you can get through it with proper research and guidance.

Students must apply for a visa at least three months before course commencement.

How to get a New Zealand student visa?

1. Explore the university and course

Before applying, explore institutions and study options that best suit your career and then decide on a course. You also need to check on all the requirements to calculate your eligibility for the program. This will also help you decide whether the New Zealand Universities' tuition fee fits your pocket.

2. Collect the documents

After checking the programmer requirements, gather all the important documents needed to apply. After deciding on a course and university you’d like to study, complete the university’s course application form online by paying the required fees and submitting all necessary documents.

The necessary documents generally include the following-

  • Citizenship and passport-sized photos
  • All academic documents and transcripts
  • Letter of Recommendation (option for some universities and programs)
  • Provisional certificates
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • An updated resume
  • Passport
  • English proficiency tests like IELTS Score

Additionally, universities have their requirements so that other documents may be needed, so make sure you see the document checklist on their website.

3. Acceptance letter from the university

You are likely to receive an offer of place from the university within 3 to 4 weeks of applying, and it can take even longer depending on your study program. Students need to be accepted by the university for the applied course.

4. Apply for Student Visa in New Zealand

To apply for a New Zealand student visa, you will need an offer from a place that your university sends after receiving the tuition fees. The general student Visa requirements are:

  • An offer of place from an approved educational institution in New Zealand
  • A valid passport
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Receipt of payment of tuition fees
  • Financial documents/ Proof of funds (In general, international students need to show NZ$ 15,000 as study fund for a year and NZ$ 1250 per month)
  • Medical certificate and chest X-ray
  • Police certificate from home country
  • Proof of sufficient funds that you need to support yourself for the duration of your study, which is NZ$15,000 each year to cover living expenses
  • Visa application fee

The student visa application form can be downloaded from the Immigration New Zealand website. After you have paid the application fee, the receipt must be included in your complete application. The fees to be paid and other information can be found on the official New Zealand Immigration website.
