MBBS is an abbreviation for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. An MBBS degree is a four-year undergraduate program for students who want to pursue their dream of becoming doctors. It is a medical science professional degree.

In India, aspiring doctors pursue a 5-year and 6-month undergraduate medical course known as Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery [MBBS]. The MBBS is a professional degree required to practice medicine, diagnose diseases, prescribe medication, and perform surgery.

The five years and six months long MBBS program include a yearlong rotational internship at non-profit organizations' hospitals, health centers, and health fairs (NGOs). Anatomy, pharmacology, pathology, community health & medicine, pediatrics, and surgery are all included in the MBBS curriculum. The curriculum is set up so holders of an MBBS degree can select a specialization to pursue further study and practice medicine.

MBBS students have a variety of specialization options, including

  • General surgery
  • Anesthesiology

Only a full-time degree program is available for the MBBS course. It is impossible to offer an MBBS degree in a part-time or Diploma format due to its demanding course curriculum and pedagogy, which combines practical and theoretical lessons.

The cost of an MBBS program can range from INR 5,00,000 to INR 50,00,000.

After completing an MBBS program, candidates have access to various job opportunities. In public and private hospitals, trains, and armed forces, they can train to be doctors. For better career opportunities, students can pursue postgraduate medical degrees like the MD or MBA after receiving their MBBS.

The most sought-after degree in India is undoubtedly the MBBS, particularly for those hoping to work in medicine.
