The Xavier Admission Test (XAT) is a national-level management entrance exam conducted by the Xavier School of Management (XLRI) on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI) for admission to various management programs.

Overview of Exam Sections

Verbal and Logical Ability

Decision-Making Section

The Decision Making section evaluates candidates' ability to make sound decisions in complex situations. This section evaluates a candidate's problem-solving skills, ability to identify ethical dilemmas, and capacity to make informed decisions. The questions in this section are based on case studies and require candidates to analyze situations, identify problems, and provide appropriate solutions.

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

The Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation section evaluates a candidate's proficiency in mathematics, problem-solving, and data analysis. The questions in this section are based on mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The data interpretation questions require candidates to analyze and interpret complex data sets using graphs, charts, and tables.

General Knowledge

The General Knowledge section evaluates a candidate's awareness of current affairs, national and international events, economics, and business. The questions in this section are based on static and dynamic GK. The questions can be from history, geography, politics, sports, entertainment, and business.

Time Allotted for Each Exam

Each section of the XAT has a time limit of 40 minutes, except for the General Knowledge section, which is given 15 minutes. The Essay Writing section is given 20 minutes. Candidates must complete each section within the allotted time. The total duration of the XAT exam is 3 hours.

Eligibility Requirements for XAT Exam

Requirements for Indian nationals:

  • The candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized or deemed university.
  • Final-year graduation students can also apply, provided they complete their graduation by the time the XAT selection process is completed.
  • There are no minimum marks required for eligibility to take the XAT exam.

Requirements for foreign nationals:

  • Foreign nationals and NRIs can apply through their GMAT scores for admission to XLRI.
  • Such candidates are required to take the GMAT exam conducted by GMAC, USA.

Requirements for NRI/PIO/OCI candidates:

  • NRI/PIO/OCI candidates who have completed their undergraduate degree from a recognized foreign university can apply through GMAT scores.
  • However, NRI/PIO/OCI candidates who have completed their undergraduate degree in India must appear for XAT 2023.

Exam Registration and Fees

The registration process for Indian nationals:

  • Candidates can register for XAT through the official website of XAT.
  • The registration process usually starts in August or September and ends in December.
  • Candidates must create a profile on the website by providing personal and academic details.
  • After filling in the application form, candidates must pay the application fee online through credit card/debit card/net banking.
  • The application fee for XAT 2023 is Rs. 1800/- for all applicants (without late fee) and Rs. 2500/- for late applicants.

The registration process for foreign nationals:

  • Foreign nationals and NRI/PIO/OCI candidates can apply through their GMAT scores for admission to XLRI.
  • Such candidates can apply through the official website of XLRI by selecting "GMAT" as their exam option.
  • After filling in the application form, candidates must pay the application fee online through credit card/debit card/net banking.
  • The application fee for GMAT candidates is US $50 or INR 3,500.

Exam fees and payment options:

  • The application fee for XAT 2023 is Rs. 1800/- for all applicants (without late fee) and Rs. 2500/- for late applicants.
  • The application fee for GMAT candidates is US $50 or INR 3,500.
  • Candidates can pay the application fee online through credit card/debit card/net banking.
  • Candidates can also pay the application fee through a demand draft drawn in favour of XLRI Jamshedpur A/c XAT, payable at Jamshedpur.

Scoring and Results

Description of Exam Scoring

  1. XAT is a computer-based exam and is scored using a process called Equating.
  2. Equating ensures that scores from different test forms are comparable, meaning that if two candidates receive the same scaled score, they have demonstrated the same ability level.
  3. Each question in XAT carries equal marks, with a negative marking scheme for incorrect answers. One-fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect answer.

Announcement of Results

  1. XAT results are usually announced in the last week of January.
  2. Results can be accessed through the official XAT website using login credentials.
  3. The XAT scorecard contains the candidate's overall percentile, sectional percentiles, and marks obtained in each section.

Interpretation of Scores

  1. XAT percentile score is calculated based on the relative performance of the candidate in comparison to other test takers.
  2. The overall percentile is used for shortlisting candidates for admission to management programs.
  3. Depending on the program requirements, the sectional percentile is also considered in some cases.
  4. A high percentile score is generally required for admission to top management programs in India.

Importance of the XAT Exam

The XAT is an important entrance exam for admission to many prestigious B-schools in India, such as XLRI, SPJIMR, IMT, XIMB, and many more. It is a gateway for management aspirants to get admission to some of the top-ranked management programs in India.
