As the human population grows, the impact on our environment becomes greater. Environmental Science is crucial in understanding these problems and finding ways to address them. In the next 40 years, the population is expected to reach over 9 billion, making it increasingly necessary to balance meeting human needs with protecting and preserving the environment. 

Environmental Science takes a holistic, data-driven, and cross-disciplinary approach to studying the relationship between human activity and the natural world. It examines the connections between our environment's physical, chemical, and biological elements.

What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science studies the interactions between human activities and the natural environment. It is an interdisciplinary field integrating knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering to understand and address environmental issues. Environmental Science examines the physical, chemical, and biological processes that shape the natural world and how human activities affect these processes. 

Environmental science aims to understand the complex relationships between humans and the environment and to develop solutions to environmental problems such as air and water pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science (PGDES) is a one-year program. The course cost can vary depending on the institution, but it generally ranges around INR 50,000. 

However, the course fee may be more affordable for students who prefer to study through distance learning, typically around INR 2250. It's worth noting that the fee structure and amount can vary depending on the institution and location, so it's always best to check with the specific institution for more accurate information.

Eligibility Criteria to Study Environmental Science

  • Undergraduate students must have completed their 10+2 education focusing on science subjects such as Biology, Mathematics, and Chemistry. 
  • A bachelor's degree in a science-related field or Environmental Science is required for postgraduate courses.
  • For a diploma in Environmental Science, there is no specific educational requirement. However, graduation from a recognised university with a minimum of 50% marks is sufficient to qualify for the course.

A degree in Environmental Science opens up a diverse range of career options. Graduates can work in government and private organisations and various industries. They can also choose to teach in colleges or universities. Some organisations that employ Environmental Science graduates include the Pollution Control Board, Water Authority, and Urban Planning. Private organisations such as food processing industries, refineries, distilleries, and fertiliser plants also offer job opportunities.

Graduates in Environmental Science have the potential to work as managers in fertiliser plants or food processing companies. Other career options include working as an Environmental Journalist for newspapers, magazines or television stations. Furthermore, many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are working on environmental issues so that graduates can join them according to their interests and choices.

Environmental Scientist

Environmental Scientists are responsible for investigating environmental issues and determining the best ways to address them. This includes researching, collecting and analysing data and developing plans and solutions to protect the environment. They may explore various topics, such as air and water pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. They also use scientific methods to understand these problems and find solutions that can be implemented to protect the environment. 

Environmental Engineers

Environmental Engineers apply their understanding of engineering and environmental science to create and implement technologies that minimise pollution and efficiently use resources. They use their knowledge of engineering principles and ecological regulations to design and develop systems and equipment that reduce waste and minimise negative environmental impacts. 

They also work on developing new technologies that can help to reduce pollution and conserve resources. They may also be involved in designing and constructing facilities, such as water treatment plants, waste management systems, and renewable energy projects. 

Conservation Biologists

Conservation Biologists study the natural environment and its inhabitants to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered species. They research the ecology and behaviour of different species and their interactions with their environment. They use this research to develop conservation plans and policies to protect and restore habitats and populations. They also work to understand the impact of human activities on biodiversity and develop strategies to mitigate it. 

This includes habitat restoration, reintroducing endangered species, or conservation breeding programs. They also work closely with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders to implement conservation programs and policies. 

Environmental Consultants

Environmental Consultants assist companies and organisations in understanding and complying with environmental regulations. They also guide implementation of sustainable practices to reduce their environmental impact. This may include conducting assessments of the organisation's environmental impact, identifying potential risks and hazards, and developing strategies to mitigate those risks. 

Additionally, they may help the organisation obtain necessary permits and certifications and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. They may also provide training and education to employees to promote environmentally friendly practices within the organisation. Overall, the role of an Environmental Consultant is to help businesses and organisations operate in an environmentally responsible manner while also complying with regulations.

Water Resource Manager

Water Resource Managers are responsible for planning, developing, and managing water resources. This includes overseeing the supply, distribution, and use of water and operating systems for flood control and irrigation. They ensure that water is available for various services, including drinking, irrigation, industrial and recreational uses, and maintain the balance of water resources for the environment.

They may be responsible for developing and implementing water resource management plans, policies, and programs, including dam construction, canals, and other water distribution infrastructure. They also monitor and assess the water resources, including water quality, to ensure they meet government standards and regulations. They also work closely with other agencies and organisations to coordinate the use of water resources and to mitigate potential conflicts.

Salary

The salary for a professional in the field of Environmental Sciences can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the type of organisation they work for, the location of their job, and their level of education and experience.

Generally speaking, entry-level positions in environmental science tend to have lower salaries, with typical starting salaries ranging from around Rs 3-4 lakh per annum. However, the compensation can increase as one gains more experience and moves up in their career. For more senior positions or specialised roles, the pay can go up to Rs 6-8 lakh annually.

It's worth noting that the salary also varies depending on the sector one is working for. For example, those working for private consulting firms or in the oil and gas industry may earn more than those working for government agencies or non-profit organisations. Similarly, working location also plays a role in salary; professionals working in metro cities tend to earn more than those working in smaller towns or rural areas.
