    The University of Sheffield (TUOS) is an English public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Its origins may be traced back to the 1828 establishment of Sheffield Medical School, the 1879 establishment of Firth College, and the 1884 establishment of Sheffield Technical School.

    In 1897, the three colleges merged to become the University College of Sheffield awarded a royal charter as the University of Sheffield by King Edward VII in 1905.

    Sheffield University has 50 academic departments divided into five divisions and one foreign faculty. The institution's yearly income for 2020-21 was £741 million, with £163 million coming from research grants and contracts and £708.6 million from spending. Sheffield is one of the top ten institutions in the United Kingdom regarding research grant money.

    According to fresh statistics from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, it has surpassed the United Kingdom's income and expenditure in engineering research (HESA). By postgraduate student enrolment, it is the seventh biggest British institution, trailing UCL, King's, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Oxford.

    The University is a founding member of the well-known Russell Group and one of the first red-brick institutions. It is also a member of the Worldwide Institutions Network, the N8 Group of the top eight research institutions in Northern England, and the White Rose University Consortium. Sheffield has been ranked among the top 100 institutions in the world by QS for the past decade.

    Time Higher Education ranked the University 22nd in Europe for teaching excellence in 2019. Sheffield is ranked 11th in the United Kingdom for research power, measured by multiplying the institution's GPA by the number of full-time equivalent people listed in the current Research Excellence Framework 2021.

    Sheffield is home to eight Nobel laureates, six alumni or previous long-term employees of the institution. They contributed to the discovery of penicillin, the citric acid cycle, the study of high-speed chemical processes, the finding of introns in eukaryotic DNA, the discovery of fullerene, and the creation of molecular machines.

    The alumni include several Heads of State, Home Secretaries, Court of Appeal judges, Booker Prize winners, astronauts, and Olympic gold medalists.
