Liverpool Hope University

    Liverpool Hope University
    Established on: 1844

Liverpool Hope University (LHU) is a public university in Liverpool, England, with campuses. Saint Katharine's College (formerly Warrington Training College), Notre Dame College, and Christ's College merged to form the university.

Liverpool Hope University is unique because it is the only university foundation in Europe (and the United States) that combines Catholic and Anglican campuses to establish an integrated, ecumenical, Christian foundation.

It happened in Liverpool and nowhere else in Europe because of the presence in the 1980s of two extraordinary church leaders: Bishop David Sheppard, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese, and Archbishop Derek Worlock, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese that stretches from Liverpool across the north of England.

They confessed their religion to each other and led their congregations to each other's cathedrals, a symbolic gesture of Christians cooperating amid religious sectarianism in Northern Ireland.

When the three colleges (St Katharine's in 1844, Notre Dame College in 1856, and Christ's College in 1964) merged, the name "Hope" was chosen from Hope Street, which connects both cathedrals - a living metaphor of what may happen when Christians join and work together for the common good.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the establishment of our first college in 1844; at the time, England had just six universities, but none admitted women, Catholics, or Jews. Liverpool Hope University's founding colleges were among the first to begin opening up higher education to the broad majority of England's population.

The Anglican Bishops of Liverpool, dating back to the first Bishop, Bishop Ryle, were all evangelicals. The bond between the Anglican Bishop and the Catholic Archbishop was founded chiefly on their shared religion and concern for the needy.

The university's commitment to the ancient Christian religion endures as it attempts to live out that faith in its life and work in a secularised British academic.

We host a Foundation Service at the start of each academic semester to reaffirm our fundamental mission and principles. Our graduation ceremonies alternate between the Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals in Liverpool.

Liverpool Hope University's new name was selected to reflect the institution's ecumenical goal.

Liverpool Hope University was established in July 2005 when the Privy Council granted permission to use the title "University." In 2009, the Privy Council gave Research Degree Awarding Powers.
