    Heriot-Watt Institution (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is an Edinburgh-based public research university. It was founded in 1821 as the Edinburgh School of Arts, the world's first mechanics' institution, and was later awarded university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the UK's eighth-oldest higher education institution. Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish benefactor and jeweller George Heriot inspired the name Heriot-Watt.

    It is one of the 23 colleges awarded university status in the 1960s and is known for its emphasis on science and engineering. In Keele and Newcastle, it is sometimes referred to as a plate-glass university.
