Bishop’s University

    Bishop’s University
    Established on: 1843

Bishop's Institution, sometimes referred to as Université Bishop's, is located in Lennoxville, a municipality in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. It is a relatively unpretentious institution with an emphasis on English-related liberal arts. Lennoxville is part of Canada.

In addition to serving as the Anglican Bishop of Quebec at the time, George Mountain established the institution that would one day be known by his name. Mountain would go on to become the first principal of McGill University.

It is one of only three educational institutions in the province of Quebec, located in the country of Canada that conduct the vast majority of their classes in the English language (the others being McGill University and Concordia University, both in Montreal).

When it united with the Lennoxville Classical School in the 1840s, it changed its name to Bishop's College School and became renowned. This marked the beginning of the establishment's long and illustrious existence. The organization was founded in 1843, and the following year, in 1853, Queen Victoria bestowed upon it a royal charter.

It is still one of the few educational institutions in Canada that are completely dedicated to providing instruction at the undergraduate level. It functions like an American liberal arts college, linked to three other educational institutions by its membership in the Maple League.

The school first opened its doors in 1843 under the name Bishop's College, and in 1853 it became affiliated with the University of Oxford, from whence a considerable number of the faculty members at BU were subsequently recruited.

Up to 1947, the Anglican church was responsible for ensuring that the school followed the correct curriculum. Since then, the institution has never joined forces with any specific religious sect or organization. Fifteen alums of Bishop's University went on to become Rhodes Scholars after graduating from the university.

It follows the same pattern as other liberal arts colleges in North America in that it does not take part in rankings that are mostly determined by research. One example of such a rating is QS.

Despite this, Bishop's University has been ranked first in Canada for student satisfaction for the last three years. Maclean's magazine ranked it sixth among Canadian schools that are completely dedicated to providing undergraduate education.

The site is shared by the university and Champlain Institution Lennoxville, a public institution in the neighborhood situated just next door and provides instruction in English.
