Bachelor in Public Health is a four years degree program worth of 149 credit hours, under the Faculty of Science and Technology. Students of public health study the ways in which biological, social, psychological, environmental and policy factors interact to influence human health. In contrast to clinical fields such as nursing and medicine, students of public health focus on health and disease within a group of population. Public health has a wider area in health promotion, disease prevention, prolonging life and social justice. An innovative and exciting component of BPH is the Field Practicum, where students are engaged in real world service to local and global communities, and are able to contribute significantly to LA GRANDEE’s mission of service. Some of the 21st century’s most pressing challenges include chronic conditions (e.g. smoking and obesity-related diseases, cancer), water and food security, HIV/AIDS, emergency preparedness, reemerging infectious diseases, violence, climate change, and health reform. In order to effectively meet these concerns, public health professionals must address multiple health challenges at once through disease prevention and health promotion frameworks. Bachelor degree education in public health will prepare students to confront these issues by entering the workforce immediately after college and/or by seeking advanced graduate training in public health and related fields. In addition, job market growth in the health, local government, and workplace and education sectors continues unabated. There is a strong demand for multi-skilled program managers and for prevention promotion workers, particularly to work with vulnerable groups and ageing populations. Government directions for health programs in most Asian countries are now geared for jobs in community settings rather than hospitals, to deal with rising rates of chronic conditions and disease, as the shift from hospital to community based programs continues. Government and non-government organizations are constantly in need of health policy analysts and policy makers which eventually justifies high career opportunities for the BPH graduates. Careers in the public, private, or non-profit sectors might include: Accident, illness and disease prevention and control, Bio-statistics, Community health work, Education and teaching, Epidemiology, Health administration, Health awareness, policy and promotion, Nutrition, dietetics and exercise, Public health management, and Research.
